Visit the Strong Current Surf Shop in the North Shore Marketplace for a glimpse at surfing history. Curator Stephen Gould presents memorabilia including massive redwood surfboards from the 1950s and sleek high-tech boards from the 21st century. Boards both famous and folly are on display: hollow wooden boards, 100+ pound long boards, a motorized surfboard, the first snowboard, and much more.
Surfing’s place in pop culture is acknowledged with posters of squeaky-clean beachgoers Frankie Avalon and Sandra Dee. Classic surf movies screen all day on a replica of the Hale‘iwa Theater’s long-gone art deco facade. Famous surfers past and present appear in classic photography from world-renowned surf photographer LeRoy Grannis and others. Exhibits also trace surfing’s history from ancient Hawaiians in the days when it was a sport reserved for royalty.
