For a taste of Hawaii’s fascinating multi-cultural history, check out Queen Emma’s Summer Palace. Just 5 miles from downtown Oahu and 10 miles from Waikiki, this Victorian house once served as the retreat for Hawaiian royalty. Queen Emma presided over the charming Victorian escape from 1857 until her death in 1885. Interestingly, the frame of the house was actually built in Boston in 1848 and shipped to Hawaii via Cape Horn. Click here to read the house’s complete history on Wikipedia.

Next Friday, November 9, the Daughters of Hawaii hosts the 2nd annual Book Day at Queen Emma, a free event featuring over 20 local authors discussing their latest works.

Thank you for posting this. I had forgotten just how beautiful the Summer Palace was! In case you’re interested, I just finished reading a wonderful book, Hawaii’s Story by Hawaii’s Queen, and have now placed it on my website if you would like to read it. It’s written by Her Majesty, Queen Liliuokalani, and it’s an interesting account of Hawaii’s royal history. It’s now in the public domain, and downloadable at http://blog.going2oahu.com/2007/11/30/hawaiis-story-by-hawaiis-queen-liliuokalani.aspx
