Surfing at Sunset Beach
Photo uploaded by
In many parts of the country, winter means bundling up and playing in the snow. Not in Oahu. Surfers from all the over the world flock to Oahu’s North Shore for winter surfing. Here’s an overview of some of the North Shore’s most famous surfing spots:
is the birthplace of big wave surfing and the site of the Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Memorial. The surf competition pays homage to legendary surfer Eddie Aikau and takes place only when the epic Waimea waves are at least 20 feet high.
is located off Ehukai Beach. The merciless waves of Pipeline break just 50 to 100 yards off the beach over a shallow reef making this one of the most dangerous surf spots in the world. To see the action during contests like the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters, enter through Ehukai Beach Park.
sits on the northernmost surf spot on the North Shore. The long wave-breaks here are the setting for the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing, the second contest in the Vans Triple Crown of surfing. Winter brings big, adrenaline-pumping waves to Sunset Beach. These waves calm down in summer, making the beach ideal for snorkeling or relaxing on the soft, golden sands.
While on the North Shore, you might also check out Dole Plantation or Helemano Plantation.

While enjoying your vacation in paradise, be sure and treat yourself to a few of Hawaii’s famous tropical drinks! Served in coconuts, pineapples, or wooden glasses shaped like Tiki heads, they’ll give you a taste of paradise.
While you’re in Waikiki Beach, be sure and try a Blue Hawaii, invented by Harry Yee on the island in 1957. A mix of blue curacao, rum, and vodka, served straight up or on the rocks, this libation is served at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach and Resort. The Tropical Itch, another favorite invented by Yee, is made of rum, passion orange juice and orange curacao.
Ironically, the Mai Tai, thought of as a signature drink of the islands, was invented in California. Due to its lush tropical ingredients, it’s still an islander’s favorite. Donn Beach created the drink in the 30s or 40s , using a concoction of light and dark rum, orange and lime juices, and orange curacao.
Forbes’ Traveler recently published a feature on the Hawaiian islands and the hottest drinks and bartenders around. Check out the article for great ideas on the right bar for you and your preferences.
To ensure enjoyment of some delicious drinks, tropical, exotic ingredients are a must! Anything with pineapple, coconut, freshly squeezed orange juice, or passion fruit is sure to give you a taste of paradise. As they say on the islands, okole maluna!

Queen Emma’s Summer Palace
Photo uploaded by
For a taste of Hawaii’s fascinating multi-cultural history, check out Queen Emma’s Summer Palace. Just 5 miles from downtown Oahu and 10 miles from Waikiki, this Victorian house once served as the retreat for Hawaiian royalty. Queen Emma presided over the charming Victorian escape from 1857 until her death in 1885. Interestingly, the frame of the house was actually built in Boston in 1848 and shipped to Hawaii via Cape Horn. .
Next Friday, November 9, the hosts the 2nd annual , a free event featuring over 20 local authors discussing their latest works.
